It’s no secret that Belize, like any other tropical destination getaway has its admirers. Considering that it has been featured on a number of international news stations as a hidden gem, paradise and untouched beauty, adds to the intrigue. And unknowingly, we’ve created tourist pockets. These range from Ambergris Caye (beach & party), Cave Tubing (adventure) and Mayan Ruins (history).

Don’t get me wrong, these are all things to do in Belize that will make for great conversation when you get home. However, many of the best things to do in Belize are activities that many tourists never even know about, let alone get to experience.

So today we’re sharing with you our round-up of what we believe are some of the best non-touristy things to do in Belize.

7.  Ice-cream & Pizza at Spanish Lookout

Coming in at #7 on our list of non-touristy things to do in Belize is perfect for the tummy. I know, ice-cream might sound so basic, but sometimes it’s more about the journey than the destination. Spanish Lookout is located in western Belize, the Cayo District to be exact and here everything is made from scratch. This quaint little village is home to the only commercial dairy producers in Belize, Western Dairies. Stop in for their variety of flavors and stay for the cheesiest pizza you’ll ever find. After getting your delicious fix, stick around and learn a little about this Mennonite community and the nearby twin towns of San Ignacio & Santa Elena.

6.  Watch a movie on the lawn in the park

For most tourists, watching a movie seems like such a typical, uneventful experience. However, if your goal is to experience Belize like the locals do, the BTL Park (in Belize City) and the US Embassy lawn (in Belmopan) livens up on weekends during the summer months with movies for the entire family.

The best part, however is that it’s free and you can bring your own food and drinks. Just be sure to bring your blanket, arrive early and pick a great spot, especially if you’re travelling with kids. Since these aren’t consistent for every weekend, you’d have to check for the schedule of these events before arriving.

5.  Go on an nontraditional food tour

Food is everywhere in Belize, but if you don’t know the right places to go for food, you might end up with a not so delicious experience. Belize is so diverse in culture, so naturally, you’ll find that a certain culture is better at preparing one food over the other.

Take a trip to the Orange Walk District for the Mestizo Food, Rum & Ruin tour where you get to eat the best Mestizo food you can find. During the week is the best time to go since the town won’t be as crowded. This tour is even more amazing during Taco Fest.

4.  Visit Shipyard & the Mennonite Way of Life

Decades ago, the government of Belize gave permission for the German Mennonites to settle in Belize on various plots of land. They brought with them extensive farming knowledge and traditions which still serves the entire country today. Shipyard, the largest settlement, is one of those plots that is still drenched in the traditional way of life. A quick drive through this community is like taking a step back in time as most of the residents still use horse and buggy as their primary mode of transportation. It’s an experience you’re not likely to forget anytime soon.

3.  Go on a hike at Victoria Peak

One of the best perks of Belize is that you don’t have to be an expert hiker to be able to hike our tallest mountain. Many visitors don’t even consider this activity because it is situated in the southern part of the country. Often too far, if you are on a day trip.

However, if you have more than 1 day to spare, take a trip to the Cockscomb Basin and trek as many trails as time allows on your way up Victoria Peak. Not to mention, the view is absolutely amazing from the top.

2.  Attend a local festival

Festivals in Belize are a little different from most countries. There are quite a few and the best ones are food festivals. These kinds are held all over the country and those who attend get an unbelizeable cultural experience since each is held in a different part of the country. Lounge with us at the Lobster Fest in Caye Caulker/ San Pedro or bit into your vacation as you enjoy Mango Fest in Hopkins. Get down and dirty at the “Agri” in Belmopan or head north for Cashew and Tilapia Fest in Crooked Tree. Different locations, different cultures, different experiences for your holiday. It doesn’t get more authentic than this.

1. Grab a bucket of beer & watch the sunset

Find a nice cool spot (preferably on a pier on an island or atop a ruin), take a bucket of cold beer and just sit and enjoy the serenity of one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. If you’re not a beer drinker, no worries, any chilled drink will do. For the Mayas, the sun was one of the most important celestial bodies in telling time. Take a drink knowing that you can forget all about time when you’re in Belize. Go slow!
